Cozy In-Home Family Photos in Boulder, CO | Winter Lifestyle Session with a Family of Five

This cozy indoor family session in Boulder captured a family of five welcoming their newest baby at home. From baking cookies in the kitchen to reading books in the living room, the afternoon unfolded naturally with warmth, laughter, and connection. A perfect example of how everyday moments can become meaningful family photographs.

Photographing Zach and Gentry’s family felt especially meaningful because they’re friends of mine, and I was welcomed into their home during such a tender season of life. With a new baby and three kids total, their home was full of movement, noise, and sweetness in the best way. We spent the early afternoon baking cookies in the kitchen and then reading books and playing in the living room. It was relaxed, familiar, and very much them.

Their home was the perfect setting for this December session. The early afternoon light filtered softly through sheer curtains, creating a warm glow that wrapped around the whole family as they moved through their routines. Being indoors allowed everyone to stay comfortable and unhurried, which is especially helpful with young kids and a newborn. It felt natural and unposed, like stepping into a regular day together.

One of my favorite things about this session was their choice to wear casual, everyday clothes. Nothing felt overstyled or forced, which really supported the lived-in, documentary feel of the images. If you’re planning an in-home family shoot, I always recommend choosing outfits you’d actually wear around the house—soft textures, neutral tones, and clothes you can move in easily make a big difference.

Gentry’s newest daughter was born just three days after my son, and her middle child was born one day after my daughter. Being in their living room, watching light spill across the floor as they cuddled, read books, and held their baby, felt deeply familiar. It was quiet, warm, and full of the kind of closeness that happens when you let life unfold naturally.

Indoor family sessions are especially perfect for families who love a documentary-style approach and want photos that feel honest and personal. If you’re drawn to images that reflect your real rhythms—making snacks, sitting on the couch, laughing in your own space—this style of session might be just right for you.

Late Fall Engagement Photos at Chautauqua Park | Katie & Jax in Boulder, CO

Katie and Jax celebrated their engagement with a warm and lively late fall session at Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado. Their afternoon shoot was filled with laughter, mountain views, and a few surprise moments thanks to some enthusiastic dogs joining in. This relaxed engagement session shows how meaningful and fun photos can feel when couples focus on simply being themselves together.

Warm late afternoon engagement portraits of couple embracing at Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado

Katie and Jax’s engagement session felt full of warmth and ease, even on a late November afternoon. They arrived excited, a little nervous, and clearly very in love. Since this was their first time having professional photos taken together, we focused on keeping things relaxed and natural. Their goal was simple: photos that felt romantic and true to who they are.

Why Chautauqua Park worked so well

Chautauqua Park is one of my favorite Boulder engagement session locations because it’s both beautiful and accessible. We stayed close to the parking lot on flat walking paths and grassy areas, which made moving between spots easy and stress-free. The end of golden hour in late November gave us soft, warm light without the crowds you see in summer. It was the perfect balance of mountain views and quiet moments together.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

For couples who want photos for save-the-dates or a wedding website, neutral layers and subtle texture photograph beautifully in late fall. Katie and Jax chose outfits that felt polished but comfortable, which helped them relax into the session. If one partner feels unsure about being photographed, candid movement and gentle prompts (walking, laughing, talking) can make the experience feel more like a date than a photo shoot.

A moment I won’t forget

One of the most memorable parts of the session happened right at the beginning. Jax’s mom brought her dogs to join in for a few photos, and she stood behind me enthusiastically barking to get their attention. I couldn’t stop laughing, and neither could Katie and Jax. It instantly broke the ice and set a playful tone for the rest of the shoot.

Laurie and Mark chose a courthouse wedding that centered on what mattered most to them: their family and their commitment to each other. Their afternoon ceremony at the Boulder Municipal Court was thoughtful, emotional, and full of quiet joy. With their kids from previous partnerships by their side, the day felt intentional and deeply personal. It was both serious and un-serious in the best way—grounded in love with plenty of laughter in between.

Couple portraits of Laurie and Mark outside the Boulder Municipal Court on a fall afternoon

The Boulder Municipal Court worked beautifully for this fall wedding because of its simple, clean setting and easy access to outdoor space for photos. Taking family and couple portraits outside before and after the ceremony allowed for relaxed moments without rushing. The afternoon light was soft and even, which kept the focus on expressions and connection rather than harsh shadows.

For courthouse weddings like this, neutral and coordinated outfits photograph especially well against the building’s architecture. Laurie and Mark’s family leaned into classic tones with a mix of formal and comfortable pieces, which felt true to their vibe. My biggest tip: choose clothing that lets you move easily and feel like yourselves—especially when kids are involved and emotions are running high.

One of my favorite moments was watching their kids watch them get married. Throughout the ceremony, I kept noticing the children’s faces—huge, goofy smiles as they followed along with the call-and-response poem and cheers. It was such a clear reminder that this wasn’t just a wedding, but the joining of two families.

Fall Family Session at Betasso Preserve | Boulder, CO Family Photographer

A calm fall family session at Betasso Preserve in Boulder, Colorado, celebrating a meaningful season of life with growing kids. With soft light, peaceful trails, and thoughtfully styled outfits, this session was all about connection, trust, and honoring the middle school years.

Family of four walking together at Betasso Preserve in Boulder during a fall family photo session

This family session at Betasso Preserve was a reminder of how meaningful it is to photograph families with older kids. It had been a while since they’d had professional photos taken, and mom wanted to mark this middle school season before it changes again. The afternoon was partly cloudy, calm, and easy-going—perfect for a relaxed shoot with space for both classic portraits and a few creative ideas. Everyone showed up open, present, and ready to trust the process.

Why Betasso Preserve worked so well

Betasso Preserve is one of my favorite locations in Boulder for family sessions, especially in the fall. The rolling hills and tall pine trees soften the light beautifully and help diffuse backlighting for a natural glow. It’s also usually quiet and uncrowded, which gives sessions a peaceful, unhurried feel. There’s a stillness there that helps families settle in and just be together.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

This family’s outfits were a great example of how to dress for fall without feeling overdone. Mom and dad wore comfy but stylish neutral sweatshirts, which grounded the look. Their daughter’s orange flowy dress with a textured belt added movement and warmth, while their son’s plaid pattern brought in personality and contrast. A cohesive color palette with one or two statement pieces can make photos feel intentional while still looking natural.

A meaningful moment from the session

One of my favorite moments was when each child took individual photos with their parents. You could see how much they enjoyed that one-on-one time, and how deeply this family cares for and respects each other. The kids were open to direction and even encouraged some out-of-the-box creative shots, which made the session feel collaborative and fun. Their trust made all the difference.

The historic Halfway House in Boulder was a perfect match for this vision. Jaycee’s outfit played a big role in the feel of the session. Her long, flowy skirt paired with a chunky sweater and jacket created movement with every step. That natural motion reflected her connection to nature and her belief that life isn’t confined to offices and boardrooms—it also happens on hiking trails, in kitchens, and in quiet moments with the people we love. Choosing clothing with texture and movement can help branding photos feel less posed and more personal

One of the most meaningful parts of this shoot was simply spending time with Jaycee. Her passion for relationships and personal growth was obvious in every conversation we had. She brought such a steady, kind energy that I found myself wanting to keep photographing well past our scheduled time. It felt less like a photo session and more like a shared walk and conversation with someone deeply invested in helping others live with more awareness and connection.

Fall Family Photos at Bobolink Trail in Boulder | Bean Family Session

The Bean family planned their fall family session at Bobolink Trail simply because they wanted photos of this season of life together. With golden hour light, a tree-lined creek, and the Flatirons in the distance, their session felt playful and relaxed. From brand new sneakers to big sister helping her twin brothers along the trail, this session was full of warmth, laughter, and connection.

The Bean family chose to schedule a fall family session simply because they wanted to celebrate this season of life together. No milestone, no special occasion—just time carved out to be present with one another. October at Bobolink Trail gave us warm light, open space, and the kind of setting that invites kids to explore. It felt relaxed, playful, and very true to who they are as a family.

Bobolink Trail worked beautifully for this session because it’s both scenic and easy to access. The paved path alongside a tree-lined creek made it simple for the kids to move around without feeling confined. With the Flatirons in the distance and even a few cows grazing in the nearby field, the backdrop felt unmistakably Boulder. Golden hour added soft light and long shadows that brought out the warmth of the fall colors and the family’s natural connection.

One styling detail I loved was how thoughtfully coordinated their outfits were. The layers added texture and depth without feeling too matchy, and the color palette photographed so well against the autumn landscape. Mom surprised the whole family with brand new Nike sneakers for the session, which turned into a fun visual thread throughout their photos. Don’t be afraid to lean into small details like shoes, jackets, or accessories—they can add personality and tell a story without overpowering the images.

Playful family laughing together beside a creek at Bobolink Trail in October

What stood out most was how kind and connected this family was with one another. Dad kept things light and silly, which had everyone laughing almost immediately. Madeline was especially sweet with her younger twin brothers, helping them over rocks and fallen branches along the trail. Those in-between moments—guiding a hand, sharing a laugh, slowing down for each other—became some of the most meaningful parts of the session.

Why this location and time of day worked well

Lost Gulch Overlook is known for its wide-open views and dramatic rock formations, but golden hour is when it truly settles into something special. Sam and Grace’s small wedding at Halfway House in Boulder was filled with laughter, close family, and heartfelt moments. From Grace’s dress reveal with both sides of the family to relaxed portraits in the foothills, their day felt joyful and deeply personal.

Sam and Grace’s small wedding felt relaxed, joyful, and deeply connected from the start. After photographing Sam’s proposal to Grace at Lost Gulch Overlook a few months earlier, it meant a lot to be asked back to document their wedding day. With about 20 guests gathered in the foothills above Boulder, the day felt intimate without feeling quiet. There was laughter everywhere and a steady sense of excitement that never tipped into nerves.

Why Halfway House and a Cloudy May Afternoon Worked So Well

Halfway House off Flagstaff Road is one of those Boulder locations that feels tucked away while still being easy for guests to access. In May, the area is lush and green, and the partly cloudy afternoon gave us soft, even light that worked beautifully for both the ceremony and family photos. The clouds kept everyone comfortable and allowed us to move through the day without rushing to beat harsh sun.

Styling and Planning Tips Inspired by This Wedding

For small weddings, simple and intentional choices go a long way. Sam and Grace kept things streamlined, which made transitions—from getting ready to the ceremony to formals—feel calm and unrushed. Neutral tones with subtle texture photographed especially well against the natural backdrop, and allowing extra time for family photos made those moments feel more like conversations than a checklist.

A Meaningful Moment from the Day

One of my favorite parts of the day was Grace’s dress reveal. She shared it first with the dads—her dad, her stepdad, and Sam’s dad—and then again with the moms, including her mom, stepmom, and Sam’s mom. Each reveal was filled with huge smiles, happy tears, and genuine excitement. It set the tone for a day where it was clear how loved and supported Sam and Grace are by both families.

Fall Family Photos at South Mesa Trailhead in Boulder, CO | Joni & Blair

Joni and Blair’s fall family session at South Mesa Trailhead celebrated their recent move to Colorado with mountain views, playful moments, and cozy fall colors. Set against the Flatirons on an overcast September afternoon, this session blended wide landscapes with lots of laughter and connection—perfect for holiday cards and a meaningful print for their home.

Fall family portrait at South Mesa Trailhead in Boulder, Colorado with the Flatirons in the background

Joni and Blair recently moved to Colorado from Texas and wanted their first family photos here to reflect everything that felt new and exciting about this place. Mountains instead of flat land. Crisp fall air instead of heat. Their session at South Mesa Trailhead in late September felt like the perfect way to mark this transition. They also planned to use these images for holiday cards and a large landscape print above their bed, so we focused on a mix of intimate moments and wide scenic frames.

Why this location and time of day worked well

South Mesa Trailhead is one of my favorite spots for family sessions because it offers so much variety in one place. We moved between the creek, a small bridge, open fields, a historic house, and views of the Flatirons without ever feeling rushed. The overcast and drizzly late afternoon gave us soft, even light and richer fall colors. It also kept the area quieter, which helped the family relax and lean into being playful together.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

The color palette Joni and Blair chose was spot on for early fall. Olive green, cream, and rust orange worked beautifully against the muted grasses and gray sky. Mom and daughter wore flowy dresses with cowboy boots, which added movement and personality without feeling overly styled. If you’re planning a fall session, think about colors that feel grounded and warm, and choose fabrics that move when you walk or spin. Texture and flow photograph especially well in breezy or drizzly weather.

A meaningful moment from the session

As the rain started coming down, several groups packed up and headed out. Another photographer nearby passed me with her clients and gave me a joyful high five, like a silent “we’ve got this.” It was such a small moment, but it lifted my spirits and reminded me how supportive the photography community can be. Joni and Blair leaned into the drizzle too—lots of laughter, tickling, and running through the field together. The weather didn’t slow them down at all.

A fall photoshoot in front of the Flatirons is truly something special for Boulder families, especially if you’re new to Colorado and want to celebrate this season of change. Acreage Brewery Proposal in Lafayette, CO | Adam & Gaby

Adam surprised Gaby with a heartfelt proposal at Acreage Brewery in Lafayette, CO, surrounded by family, Flatirons views, and an unforgettable best friend reunion.

Surprise proposal at Acreage Brewery overlooking Boulder and the Flatirons

Adam and Gaby’s proposal at Acreage Brewery was full of surprise, laughter, and the kind of energy that makes everyone around you feel it too. Gaby’s aunt, Dominique, reached out to plan the moment, and I loved being part of the behind-the-scenes coordination. Adam and Gaby arrived thinking they were celebrating a family anniversary, completely unaware of what was about to happen. What followed was a proposal surrounded by family, stunning views, and a lot of joyful shock.

Adam proposing to Gaby at Acreage Brewery in Lafayette, Colorado with Flatirons views

Why this location and time of day worked so well

Acreage Brewery in Lafayette is a beautiful proposal spot with wide-open views of Boulder and the Flatirons in the distance. In September, the late afternoon light paired with mostly cloudy skies created soft, even lighting and a dramatic sky backdrop. The space allowed Adam to pull Gaby aside for a private moment while still keeping their family close enough to join the celebration right after she said yes.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

Neutral tones and simple layers photographed beautifully against the sky and mountain views. For proposals, I always recommend outfits that feel like “you,” but with a little polish—nothing too formal, nothing too casual. Comfortable shoes are key since you’ll likely be walking or standing for a bit. If family will be nearby, coordinating colors lightly (without matching) helps everything feel cohesive in photos.

A meaningful moment from the session

I was on edge waiting for Adam to get down on one knee—not just because it’s emotional, but because I wanted to make sure I had a clear view. A few groups of people kept walking toward the exact spot where the proposal was about to happen, and I had to quietly ask them to pause and take another path. When Adam finally knelt and Gaby realized what was happening, her shock turned into pure joy. The surprise didn’t end there—her best friend flew in from out of town and appeared right after she said yes, leading to the sweetest, most emotional reunion.

Early Fall Family Photos at South Mesa Trailhead | Boulder Family Photographer

Kara wanted to celebrate her family of five with a relaxed outdoor session, and South Mesa Trailhead was the perfect backdrop. The kids were playful, the light was golden, and the tall grasses added texture and warmth. Kara’s thoughtful outfit choices, including a white wide-brim hat and cozy jacket, brought extra dimension to the photos. This session was all about connection, fun, and enjoying early fall together.

Family portrait in tall grass at South Mesa Trailhead during golden hour

Early fall at South Mesa Trailhead is hard to beat, and this afternoon family session felt especially joyful. Kara wanted photos to celebrate her family of five and soak in the beauty of late September, and everything about the day aligned. The light was warm, the grass was tall, and the kids showed up ready to play. It was one of those sessions that felt easy from start to finish.

Why South Mesa Trailhead worked so well

South Mesa Trailhead is one of my favorite Boulder locations for family photos, especially in early fall. The open trails, golden grasses, and mountain views give kids space to move without feeling confined. Shooting during golden hour added soft, directional light that flattered everyone and brought out the rich fall tones in the landscape. It’s a spot that feels relaxed and natural—perfect for families who don’t want anything too posed.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

This family’s neutral color palette with pops of burgundy worked beautifully against the early fall backdrop. Those deeper tones added warmth without overpowering the scene. Kara’s last-minute addition of a white wide-brim hat and a cozy quilted jacket was a great example of how layering can elevate an outfit and add visual interest. Simple, thoughtful layers photograph so well, especially when temperatures start to cool.

A meaningful moment from the session

What stood out most was how sweet the kids were with each other. The older siblings naturally looked out for the youngest, and their bond showed in every interaction. Watching them play together in the tall grass, laughing and following directions with ease, made the session feel more like an afternoon adventure than a photo shoot. The sunshine really did look good on them.

Thinking about your own family photos?

This type of session is wonderful for any family, and especially for families with young kids. Those early years move quickly, and photos like these are a way to honor the season you’re in right now. If you’re considering an outside family session in Boulder, I’d love to help you plan something that feels relaxed, personal, and true to your family.

Chautauqua Park Maternity Photos in Boulder, CO | A Calm Summer Session

Pekabu and David’s maternity session at Chautauqua Park in Boulder was filled with calm, connection, and quiet anticipation as they prepared to welcome their first child. Golden hour light and a flowing summer dress made this accessible mountain setting feel both intimate and peaceful.

Intimate moment of Pekabu and David embracing in the grassy fields of Boulder, CO

There’s something really grounding about maternity sessions that are slow, intentional, and focused on connection. Pekabu and David’s afternoon maternity session at Chautauqua Park felt exactly like that—calm, full of anticipation, and deeply sweet. After years of trying to conceive, this season carried so much meaning for them. And with a baby girl on the way, this chapter deserved space to be honored.

Why Chautauqua Park at Golden Hour Worked So Well

Chautauqua Park is one of my favorite Boulder locations for maternity photos, especially in July. It’s incredibly accessible, with flat walking paths just minutes from the parking lot, which makes it ideal for expecting parents. The open grassy areas paired with mountain views give variety without requiring much movement. As golden hour settled in, the light softened everything—skin tones, movement, and the quiet moments between them.

Styling Tips Inspired by This Session

Pekabu’s dress was a perfect example of how thoughtful styling can elevate a maternity session without feeling overdone. The fitted bodice highlighted her bump beautifully, while the flowy skirt added movement and ease. Exposed collarbones and soft, puffy shoulders photographed so well and kept the look feminine and relaxed. Pairing that with David’s laid-back outfit kept everything feeling natural and balanced. A Moment That Stuck With Me

What stood out most was how patient and gentle they were with each other. There was no rushing, no over-posing—just a lot of holding, quiet hugs, and small kisses. Watching them interact felt like witnessing a slow dance between two people very much in love, fully present with each other and with what’s ahead.

A 50-Year Love Story: A Backyard Anniversary Reception in Boulder, Colorado

Nanette and Mike celebrated 50 years of marriage with a western-themed backyard reception in Boulder, Colorado. Surrounded by family, friends, and grandchildren, the afternoon was full of laughter, golden hour light, and meaningful moments, from Shabbat blessings to dancing grandkids.

Guests enjoying appetizers and drinks during a western-themed backyard anniversary party

Some gatherings feel less like an event and more like a reunion of hearts—and this backyard reception for Nanette and Mike was exactly that. They were celebrating 50 years of marriage with a full vow renewal weekend, starting with a Friday night reception that honored their history and the community they’ve built together. Friends flew in from all over the country, family filled every corner of the yard, and the energy was relaxed, joyful, and deeply meaningful. Photographing this felt like being welcomed into something very special.

Why a backyard reception in June worked so well

Hosting the reception in their son Andrew and daughter-in-law Ellory’s backyard made everything feel personal and unpretentious. June afternoons in Colorado offer that perfect balance—warm light, long conversations, and golden hour that invites people to linger. As the sun lowered, guests moved easily between mingling, music, and dinner, without the formality that can sometimes come with traditional venues.

Styling and planning tips inspired by this celebration

Nanette and Mike chose a western theme to mirror the Friday night reception they had 50 years ago, and it gave the evening such a cohesive, playful feel. If you’re planning an anniversary or milestone celebration, leaning into a theme tied to your own story can be incredibly grounding. Comfortable seating, family-style dining, and live music encouraged connection rather than a rigid schedule—something I always recommend for events centered around togetherness.

A moment that stayed with me

Before dinner, Nanette and Mike’s sons and their families gathered everyone for Shabbat candle lighting and blessings. The yard went quiet in a way that felt intentional and reverent. Later, during cocktail hour, the grandkids—decked out in their western outfits—gravitated toward the local band, dancing and watching the musicians with total curiosity and joy. It was one of those scenes where generations naturally overlap, without anyone trying to make it “a moment.”

On a personal note, this was also my first photography job back after welcoming my son just two weeks earlier. Being surrounded by a couple celebrating 50 years of marriage, family continuity, and deep-rooted love felt especially grounding.

Planning a celebration of your own?

This kind of coverage is perfect for anniversary parties, milestone birthdays, engagement parties, celebrations of life, or any gathering where the people matter more than the production. If you’re planning something meaningful and want it documented in a calm, thoughtful way, I’d love to connect.

A Playful Late Spring Family & Maternity Session at Bobolink Trail | Boulder, CO

A late spring family and maternity session at Bobolink Trail in Boulder, Colorado with Zach and Gentry and their two kids. This overcast golden hour shoot featured playful exploration, textured styling, and dramatic stormy skies as they documented the season before welcoming their third baby.

Late spring in Boulder has a way of keeping you on your toes, and this session was a perfect example. Zach and Gentry wanted something simple and close to home to mark this season before welcoming their third baby in June. With their two kids along for the adventure, we met at Bobolink Trail for a quick, meaningful family maternity session that felt easy and true to them. Even with changing weather, the afternoon unfolded in a really special way.

Why Bobolink Trail Worked So Well

Bobolink Trail is one of those locations that quietly does a lot of work for families. There’s a parking lot right there, minimal walking if you want to keep things close, and a wide, accessible multi-use path that works beautifully for strollers and wheelchairs. In late spring, the open space feels fresh and green without being overwhelming. The overcast golden hour light softened everything, and the light rain added mood without slowing us down.

Styling Notes Inspired by This Session

Gentry’s crochet cardigan was such a standout. Textured pieces like crochet, knits, or linen add depth without feeling busy, especially in neutral or earthy tones. They photograph beautifully in soft light and move well when there’s a breeze. For families, outfits that feel comfortable and a little playful make it easier to stay present—especially when kids want to explore.

A Moment I Won’t Forget

As the session went on, a rainstorm started to roll through. The sky turned dark and dramatic, the wind picked up, and the kids kept moving like nothing had changed. What stayed with me most was Gentry—calm, grounded, and steady in the middle of it all. It felt like such a clear reflection of motherhood: staying centered in the chaos, soft and steady while holding everything together.

February Maternity Session at Shanahan Ridge | Boulder, CO

Meagan and Zach’s maternity session at Shanahan Ridge in Boulder took place on a mild winter evening during golden hour. As first-time parents-to-be, they wanted photos that reflected both their excitement and the long journey it took to get here. With mountain views, open fields, and soft winter light, this session felt calm, sweet, and deeply meaningful.

Meagan and Zach’s maternity session took place during a mild February evening at Shanahan Ridge in Boulder. They’re first-time parents-to-be, married for five years, and very ready for this next chapter after a long journey to get here. From the start, the energy felt calm and joyful—equal parts excitement and quiet reflection. It was a session rooted in love, anticipation, and ease.

Why Shanahan Ridge worked so well

Shanahan Ridge is one of those Boulder locations that offers a lot without asking much in return. Easy street parking and a short, three-minute uphill walk lead to open fields, forested edges, and wide mountain views. Shooting at golden hour in the winter gave us soft, directional light without the intensity of summer sun. The muted seasonal colors paired beautifully with the mountains in the background, keeping everything feeling grounded and peaceful.

Styling notes inspired by this shoot

Meagan wore a flowy, cream-colored dress that moved effortlessly in the breeze and highlighted her bump in a natural way. The softness of the fabric added gentle movement, which photographed beautifully in the low winter light. Both Meagan and Zach chose light-colored outfits that stood out against the deep forest greens behind them—an easy reminder that simple, intentional color choices can make a big difference.

A meaningful moment from the session

At one point, Meagan paused and got a little choked up talking about their baby girl and how long it took to get here. Zach quietly held her, letting the moment be what it was. We slowed down, gave space for that feeling, and kept things gentle. Those few minutes said more than any posed photo ever could.

An Indoor Family Lifestyle Session in Lafayette, CO | Thanksgiving Week at Waneka Lake

An extended family gathered in Lafayette, Colorado for an early Thanksgiving celebration, bringing together relatives from near and far—including a grandmother who traveled from Malaysia. This lifestyle family session documented both quiet moments at Waneka Lake and the joyful chaos of cooking together at home.

There’s something grounding about photographing families exactly as they are, in a season when togetherness feels especially meaningful. This indoor family lifestyle session took place in Lafayette, Colorado, a week before Thanksgiving, when Hannah and her husband gathered siblings and their mom—who flew in from Malaysia—for a rare moment all together. They wanted photographs that felt honest and unposed, documenting the way their family actually shows up for one another. Early afternoon light, an overcast sky, and a home full of activity set the tone for a session that felt genuine from start to finish.

Why Lafayette and early afternoon worked so well

We started outdoors at Waneka Lake, where the soft November cloud cover created beautifully diffused light—no harsh shadows, just even, flattering tones. Parking close to the path made it easy for everyone, including kids ages 2–16, to move comfortably without turning it into a hike. With just a short walk up a small hill, we had the lake right behind us, reflecting light back onto the family. It wasn’t crowded, which meant we could stay relaxed and focused on each other rather than navigating passersby.

Afterward, we transitioned back to the Airbnb where everyone was staying. Being in a familiar, lived-in space allowed me to step back and photograph as a fly on the wall while the family prepped food, talked, and moved through the afternoon naturally.

Styling notes inspired by this session

At the lake, most of the family wore neutral tones, which photographed beautifully against the water and late-fall landscape. The standout was a two-year-old’s yellow jacket—it added just enough color without feeling distracting. Layers played a big role here too. Jackets, sweaters, and vests added dimension and movement, which is especially helpful in cooler months. Most importantly, everyone wore clothing they were comfortable in, and that ease showed up clearly in the photos.

A moment I won’t forget

One of my favorite moments happened inside, when cousins and grandma teamed up to wipe two-year-old Ollie’s runny nose. The range of reactions—concern, laughter, mild horror—was priceless. Later, the energy shifted to focused excitement as the family put final touches on Thanksgiving dinner, especially the turducken. One couple owns a restaurant, and their pride in the food was obvious. Everyone pitched in, conversations flowed, and there was a real sense of appreciation for being together. I left half-jokingly asking if they’d adopt me—it felt that warm.

Is this type of session right for you?

Lifestyle family sessions are ideal for anyone who wants photos that reflect real life, not a version of it. They’re especially meaningful for parents who want to remember what this season actually looked like—the dynamics, the movement, the in-between moments—while kids are growing so quickly.

If you’re interested in a family lifestyle session in Boulder County or beyond, I’d love to hear what your gathering looks like.

Kat & Sam: Close & In Love

Nine years ago, Kat and Sam’s love story began with an improv show and a perfectly timed quote. Six years into marriage, after countless adventures, they chose to celebrate their love with a golden hour photoshoot at Matthews/Winters Park—filled with laughter, tenderness, and the undeniable closeness they share.

Nine years ago, Kat and Sam’s love story began at a lesbian bar in Denver, where an improv show, a tricky prompt, and a tattooed quote set the stage for their lifelong adventure. From scaling peaks to dancing the night away, their journey together has been one of laughter, exploration, and unwavering love. To celebrate that love, they chose to have a photoshoot at Matthews/Winters Park, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.

As Sam recalls, their relationship has always moved at an adventure’s pace:

  • A third date spent in Cleveland on Valentine’s Day.

  • Buying a house together at nine months.

  • A proposal featuring five apple pie recipes.

  • A barnyard wedding in the mountains.

  • Summiting Long’s Peak together, climbing all of Colorado’s 14ers, and road-tripping through Chile for six weeks on their honeymoon.

From Nepal to Peru, from mountaintops to EDM festivals, Kat and Sam have built a life of bold, beautiful experiences—and they’re preparing for their biggest adventure yet: parenthood.

Their session at Matthews/Winters Park was the perfect blend of romance and playfulness. It also helped that they brought along their beloved dog, Kelso!

Kat and Sam’s chemistry was undeniable; they melted into each other effortlessly, filling the air with laughter and warmth. Whether sharing a quiet embrace or bursting into giggles, every moment reflected the deep bond they’ve built over the years.

Adding a personal touch, they brought along hats gifted by Sam’s sister for Christmas—a small but meaningful detail woven into their shoot. Their outfits, the soft golden light, and their deep connection all came together to create images that truly embodied their love story.

My goal was to capture their relationship in its truest form—joyful, intimate, and full of love. I encouraged them to reminisce about their years together, to hold each other close, and simply be present with one another. This resulted in a collection of images that I hope bring them a sense of pride and happiness every time they look back on them.

Kat and Sam’s story is a testament to love that is fearless, adventurous, and beautifully real. As they step into this next chapter of their journey, one thing is certain—they are truly each other’s safe harbor.

Romantic Sunset Proposal at Lost Gulch Overlook

Grace and Sam’s romantic sunset proposal at Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, Colorado. Against the backdrop of dramatic mountain vistas and moody skies, Sam surprised Grace with an unforgettable moment. This intimate engagement captures the beauty of love and Colorado’s stunning landscapes—perfect inspiration for adventurous couples planning a mountain proposal.

Man kneels down to propose to girlfriend on top of Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, CO

When Grace and Sam met on October 1, 2023, at a Texas A&M tradition of pulling football tickets, neither of them knew it was the start of a lifelong relationship. Just two weeks later, they officially began dating, and over a year later, they got engaged at the top of Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, Colorado.

The couple, both proud Texas natives and seniors at Texas A&M set to graduate in May 2025, decided to spend their school break exploring Colorado’s dramatic landscapes. Unlike the wide-open plains of Texas, the towering mountain ranges and stunning vistas were an entirely new experience for them. Little did Grace know, Sam had planned a proposal at the top of the overlook.

As the sun started to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in dramatic hues, Sam brought Grace to Lost Gulch Overlook, a place he had chosen after seeing my photos of previous shoots there. He was drawn to the location’s wide mountain views and moody, breathtaking scenery—it perfectly matched the vision he had for their proposal.

Unbeknownst to Grace, Sam had meticulously planned every detail to keep the moment a surprise. Despite the icy cold and strong winds whipping through the overlook, the couple stood alone, surrounded by the grandeur of the mountains. It was an intimate moment, just the two of them against the dramatic backdrop.

Couple kisses right after engagement on top of Lost Gulch Overlook in Boulder, CO

When Sam dropped to one knee, Grace was in complete shock. She had no idea this moment was coming. But as the initial surprise faded, she started piecing together all the little moments leading up to this day, realizing that Sam’s recent behaviors and certain conversations had all been part of this grand plan.

As a photographer, capturing this moment came with its own set of challenges. Staying hidden from Grace while ensuring I was close enough to capture clear shots was tricky—especially while navigating the rocky terrain of Lost Gulch. The strong winds and the need to scramble across uneven rocks only added to the drama of the moment. But seeing Grace’s genuine surprise and the raw emotions of the proposal made the effort worthwhile.

I had such a fun time planning this proposal with Sam via FaceTime while he was in Texas and I was so impressed with how easy-going he was despite some of the hurdles he had to get through. My hat goes off to anyone who has to pull of a big surprise for their significant other because there are always a handful of factors outside of your control. I was so happy that it all came together as Sam wanted and loved spending the time post-propospal taking more pictures of the newly engaged couple!

A Joyful Family Photoshoot in North Boulder’s Serene Open Field

Mom and dad standing in open field during golden hour with their kids on their backs in North Boulder, CO

About the Family

Andrew and Ellory are have two wonderfully fun and lovable little kids. Their two-year-old daughter is expressive, observant, and fiercely independent, always eager to do things her own way. Their sweet, inquisitive son adds to the family’s joyful dynamic, with both kids often bringing silliness and playfulness to each moment.

The family lives in a tranquil North Boulder neighborhood with stunning mountain views, where they often enjoy long walks together. For their photoshoot, they chose a nearby open field, a spot they cherish for its beauty and peacefulness. Staying close to home was also practical, ensuring they could quickly retreat if the famously unpredictable Boulder winds picked up.

The Location

Though I was skeptical of meeting at an open field that I hadn’t scouted before, it ended up being a perfect choice. Nestled in their serene neighborhood, this field was not only meaningful to the family but also a breathtaking backdrop with its sweeping views of the mountains. The natural beauty of the spot paired effortlessly with the family’s connection, creating wonderfully warm photos.

The Session

I encouraged Andrew and Ellory to simply love on their kids and enjoy the moment, which set the tone for a relaxed and fun experience. The kids thrived in this environment, running around freely, posing for photos with their parents, and even suggesting a few ideas of their own!

Most of the photos were candid, capturing the family in their natural element. By letting this sweet family interact naturally, I was able to document their love and bond in a way that felt genuine and true to who they are.

The Outcome and My Perspective

I was so happy to learn (and receive in the mail!) that Andrew and Ellory used a selection of photos from this shoot for their holiday photos. It’s fitting for a family who has a shelf full of holiday cards from friends and family—a testament to how deeply they are loved and connected. Ellory also selected one of her photos for her email profile picture, a lovely reminder of this special session.

What stood out most to me during this session was the obvious and unwavering love Andrew and Ellory have for their kids. They embrace each child’s unique personality and lean into their quirks and individuality. This openness and acceptance created a session filled with laughter and ease and I’m already looking forward to our next session!

Love in the Mountains: A Wedding Attire Session at Lost Gulch Overlook

An intimate wedding attire session at Lost Gulch Overlook captured the love story of Matt, Keesha, and their 8-year-old son, Sebastian. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Colorado’s mountains at sunrise, this session celebrated their recent vows, the blending of their family, and a shared journey of freedom and connection.

Bride and groom stand on top of Lost Gulch lookout in Boulder, CO with their young son

When Matt and Keesha chose Lost Gulch Overlook for their wedding attire photos, it was more than a celebration of their recent vows—it was a reflection of their remarkable journey as a couple. With breathtaking mountain vistas, the soft glow of a January sunrise, and the joyful presence of Matt’s 8-year-old son, Sebastian, this session beautifully captured their love, their family, and their shared sense of freedom and adventure.

Keesha’s journey to finding love with Matt began in March 2022, after she had embarked on a path of self-discovery and freedom. Having relocated from South Florida to a townhouse near Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs—complete with views of Ute Valley Park inspired by one of her favorite shows, Virgin River—she was embracing her untamed independence, much like the themes in Glennon Doyle’s Untamed.

Meeting Matt felt like the natural continuation of that freedom. With him, Keesha felt untethered and fully accepted for who she is—her aspirations, desires, and unconventional choices, the very things that once felt stifled by societal and familial expectations. Matt’s easygoing nature and shared progressive values created a foundation where their connection could thrive.

black and white image of bride and groom smiling at Lost Gulch lookout in Boulder, CO

Their relationship, Keesha explains, feels like the famous School of Athens painting, which they proudly display in their home library. Matt sees himself as Plato, pointing upward as he dives into abstract, metaphysical ideas, while Keesha plays the role of Aristotle, grounding their conversations in practical, actionable goals. Together, they bring out the best in each other, their conversations electrified by differing viewpoints and a shared curiosity about the world.

Their bond only deepened as they planned their January 1, 2025, elopement at Rocky Mountain National Park, symbolizing the beginning of their life together as a married couple and a blended family.

Lost Gulch Overlook provided the perfect backdrop for this next chapter in their story. The sweeping mountain views and serene setting mirrored the untamed beauty of their journey as a couple. Starting the session at 7 a.m., they braved the cold winds of January, with soft, glowy light creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere that highlighted the warmth of their connection.

Keesha, a vision of grace in her wedding gown, faced the chilly winds with an easygoing enthusiasm that reflected her excitement for the moment. Matt’s tender care—ensuring Keesha stayed warm and comfortable—was a testament to the strong partnership they’ve built.

Sebastian’s role in the photoshoot brought another layer of joy and meaning. As an integral part of their family, he appeared in about half the photos, his bright smile and cheerful energy shining through every shot. His excitement for his dad’s marriage to Keesha was heartwarming, especially during a moment when Matt and Sebastian shared reasons they love Keesha.

Sebastian’s thoughtful and articulate words were a testament to the strong bond he shares with Keesha, showing not only his admiration but also how deeply she has been embraced as part of their family.

While Matt and Keesha are saving for a home and planning to host a larger celebration in the future, their intimate session at Lost Gulch Overlook was a powerful reflection of their love story—a celebration of blending families, embracing freedom, and finding beauty in life’s quieter, more personal moments.

From their untamed beginnings to their thoughtful, balanced partnership, Matt and Keesha’s story reminds us that love isn’t just about finding someone who complements you but someone who frees you to be your truest self.
