Fall Family Session at Betasso Preserve | Boulder, CO Family Photographer
This family session at Betasso Preserve was a reminder of how meaningful it is to photograph families with older kids. It had been a while since they’d had professional photos taken, and mom wanted to mark this middle school season before it changes again. The afternoon was partly cloudy, calm, and easy-going—perfect for a relaxed shoot with space for both classic portraits and a few creative ideas. Everyone showed up open, present, and ready to trust the process.
Why Betasso Preserve worked so well
Betasso Preserve is one of my favorite locations in Boulder for family sessions, especially in the fall. The rolling hills and tall pine trees soften the light beautifully and help diffuse backlighting for a natural glow. It’s also usually quiet and uncrowded, which gives sessions a peaceful, unhurried feel. There’s a stillness there that helps families settle in and just be together.
Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot
This family’s outfits were a great example of how to dress for fall without feeling overdone. Mom and dad wore comfy but stylish neutral sweatshirts, which grounded the look. Their daughter’s orange flowy dress with a textured belt added movement and warmth, while their son’s plaid pattern brought in personality and contrast. A cohesive color palette with one or two statement pieces can make photos feel intentional while still looking natural.
A meaningful moment from the session
One of my favorite moments was when each child took individual photos with their parents. You could see how much they enjoyed that one-on-one time, and how deeply this family cares for and respects each other. The kids were open to direction and even encouraged some out-of-the-box creative shots, which made the session feel collaborative and fun. Their trust made all the difference.
Thinking about your own family session?
This type of session is perfect for families with growing kids who want to honor the season they’re in right now. If you’ve been waiting for “the right time” to update your family photos, this might be it. I’d love to help you plan a relaxed, meaningful family session that feels true to your family and where you are today.
