Early fall at South Mesa Trailhead is hard to beat, and this afternoon family session felt especially joyful. Kara wanted photos to celebrate her family of five and soak in the beauty of late September, and everything about the day aligned. The light was warm, the grass was tall, and the kids showed up ready to play. It was one of those sessions that felt easy from start to finish.

Why South Mesa Trailhead worked so well

South Mesa Trailhead is one of my favorite Boulder locations for family photos, especially in early fall. The open trails, golden grasses, and mountain views give kids space to move without feeling confined. Shooting during golden hour added soft, directional light that flattered everyone and brought out the rich fall tones in the landscape. It’s a spot that feels relaxed and natural—perfect for families who don’t want anything too posed.

Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot

This family’s neutral color palette with pops of burgundy worked beautifully against the early fall backdrop. Those deeper tones added warmth without overpowering the scene. Kara’s last-minute addition of a white wide-brim hat and a cozy quilted jacket was a great example of how layering can elevate an outfit and add visual interest. Simple, thoughtful layers photograph so well, especially when temperatures start to cool.
