An Indoor Family Lifestyle Session in Lafayette, CO | Thanksgiving Week at Waneka Lake

There’s something grounding about photographing families exactly as they are, in a season when togetherness feels especially meaningful. This indoor family lifestyle session took place in Lafayette, Colorado, a week before Thanksgiving, when Hannah and her husband gathered siblings and their mom—who flew in from Malaysia—for a rare moment all together. They wanted photographs that felt honest and unposed, documenting the way their family actually shows up for one another. Early afternoon light, an overcast sky, and a home full of activity set the tone for a session that felt genuine from start to finish.

Why Lafayette and early afternoon worked so well

We started outdoors at Waneka Lake, where the soft November cloud cover created beautifully diffused light—no harsh shadows, just even, flattering tones. Parking close to the path made it easy for everyone, including kids ages 2–16, to move comfortably without turning it into a hike. With just a short walk up a small hill, we had the lake right behind us, reflecting light back onto the family. It wasn’t crowded, which meant we could stay relaxed and focused on each other rather than navigating passersby.

Afterward, we transitioned back to the Airbnb where everyone was staying. Being in a familiar, lived-in space allowed me to step back and photograph as a fly on the wall while the family prepped food, talked, and moved through the afternoon naturally.

Styling notes inspired by this session

At the lake, most of the family wore neutral tones, which photographed beautifully against the water and late-fall landscape. The standout was a two-year-old’s yellow jacket—it added just enough color without feeling distracting. Layers played a big role here too. Jackets, sweaters, and vests added dimension and movement, which is especially helpful in cooler months. Most importantly, everyone wore clothing they were comfortable in, and that ease showed up clearly in the photos.

A moment I won’t forget

One of my favorite moments happened inside, when cousins and grandma teamed up to wipe two-year-old Ollie’s runny nose. The range of reactions—concern, laughter, mild horror—was priceless. Later, the energy shifted to focused excitement as the family put final touches on Thanksgiving dinner, especially the turducken. One couple owns a restaurant, and their pride in the food was obvious. Everyone pitched in, conversations flowed, and there was a real sense of appreciation for being together. I left half-jokingly asking if they’d adopt me—it felt that warm.

Is this type of session right for you?

Lifestyle family sessions are ideal for anyone who wants photos that reflect real life, not a version of it. They’re especially meaningful for parents who want to remember what this season actually looked like—the dynamics, the movement, the in-between moments—while kids are growing so quickly.

If you’re interested in a family lifestyle session in Boulder County or beyond, I’d love to hear what your gathering looks like.
