Fall Family Photos at South Mesa Trailhead in Boulder, CO | Joni & Blair
Joni and Blair recently moved to Colorado from Texas and wanted their first family photos here to reflect everything that felt new and exciting about this place. Mountains instead of flat land. Crisp fall air instead of heat. Their session at South Mesa Trailhead in late September felt like the perfect way to mark this transition. They also planned to use these images for holiday cards and a large landscape print above their bed, so we focused on a mix of intimate moments and wide scenic frames.
Why this location and time of day worked well
South Mesa Trailhead is one of my favorite spots for family sessions because it offers so much variety in one place. We moved between the creek, a small bridge, open fields, a historic house, and views of the Flatirons without ever feeling rushed. The overcast and drizzly late afternoon gave us soft, even light and richer fall colors. It also kept the area quieter, which helped the family relax and lean into being playful together.
Styling and session tips inspired by this shoot
The color palette Joni and Blair chose was spot on for early fall. Olive green, cream, and rust orange worked beautifully against the muted grasses and gray sky. Mom and daughter wore flowy dresses with cowboy boots, which added movement and personality without feeling overly styled. If you’re planning a fall session, think about colors that feel grounded and warm, and choose fabrics that move when you walk or spin. Texture and flow photograph especially well in breezy or drizzly weather.
A meaningful moment from the session
As the rain started coming down, several groups packed up and headed out. Another photographer nearby passed me with her clients and gave me a joyful high five, like a silent “we’ve got this.” It was such a small moment, but it lifted my spirits and reminded me how supportive the photography community can be. Joni and Blair leaned into the drizzle too—lots of laughter, tickling, and running through the field together. The weather didn’t slow them down at all.
A soft invitation
A fall photoshoot in front of the Flatirons is truly something special for Boulder families, especially if you’re new to Colorado and want to celebrate this season of change. If you’re dreaming of photos that feel relaxed, connected, and rooted in the landscape, I’d love to help you plan something similar.
